ALEC Action CEO Lisa B. Nelson released the following statement on U.S. House passage of H.R. 1, which makes permanent the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017. In a letter delivered to Congress last year, more than 400 state legislators – members of the American Legislative Exchange Council – explained that extending President Trump’s signature tax reform package is crucial to protecting the American taxpayer and enhancing economic growth.

“Today’s passage of H.R. 1 is nothing short of a historic moment. This is the kind of bold, sweeping reform that provided the foundation for America’s prosperity in the first place and will lead us into the future.

“By making President Trump’s tax cuts permanent, expanding American energy production, implementing Medicaid work requirements, and securing our southern border, the House has listened to the states, listened to the people, and taken a giant step toward a new era of American greatness.

“For years, state legislators have led the charge on tax reform and fiscal discipline, with 25 states lowering income tax rates since 2021. They’ve shown that conservative, pro-growth policies work, and now, Washington is finally catching up.

“This bill keeps more money in the pockets of working families, provides entrepreneurs the freedom to grow, and sends the message that America is back. Speaker Johnson, Chairman Arrington, and every House leader who supported this bill should be applauded for their courage and clarity of vision.

“We urge the Senate to finish the job, so that H.R. 1 will be remembered as the moment we turned the page on decline and began writing the next great chapter in the American story. ALEC Action stands shoulder to shoulder with every leader who’s ready to build that future.”
